3.Set the drop-down menu at the top right of the Activity Monitor interface to 'My Processes' to view only those that belong to your user ID. Switch to 'All Processes' to see the full list of what's running on your MacBook Pro.
4.Click on the name of a process to select it. Shift-click on another item in the list to select all the entries between your original selection and the second process name you select. Command-click on additional entries to add them to your selection individually. After you've made your selection, set the drop-down menu to 'Selected Processes' to track only those items in the list of processes. Note that the statistics at the bottom of the window continue to reflect all the processes running on your system.
5.Click on the 'CPU' header in the main portion of the Activity Monitor window to sort the list of processes by the amount of CPU capacity they use. When the arrow on the CPU header tab points down, the list sorts in descending order with the most active processes at the top. Click on the header a second time to change the sort order.

Nicolas Raoul♦I often browse in the console using w3m. Being a console app I thought that it would be intimidating, but in fact it is very easy to use. Note that w3m supports the two features that you mention: tabs and low memory usage.
For browsing simple websites such as Slashdot I find w3m even easier to use that Firefox, but for web applications (such as Stack Overflow) it is useless.

Also you may find useful the option 'Don't load tabs until selected' (Options → tab 'Tabs') if you don't need to load content from all pages directly at start-up.
Maybe Adblock will help also but it depends on your pages. Don't forget that you may also write your personal rules to block loading of unneeded elements.
If you already using Firefox as a normal browser, you will be interested in creating separate profile with adjusted settings and launching them in parallel.

There are two browsers that I know of that will support your requirements. One is Diglo and the other is Blackhawk. They are both based off of Chrome but their memory use is very low. I have ran as many as 300+tabs on Diglo.
