A while back I broke down to the peer pressure in the APEX community (you know who you are ;-) and bought a Mac Book Air. I’m still learning the ropes and one thing that took some time to get working was the Oracle Instant Client. Installing it isn’t as straightforward as installing the Instant Client on Windows.

  • Oracle Client 11gR2 (11.2.0.3) for Apple Mac OS X (Intel) It has been a while since we for the last time received some native software for the mac from Oracle. Short before the release of Oracle rdbms v12 it happened again, the v11gR2 client for the mac is released.
  • Just a guess, but the client download on this page might be want you want. I know nothing about Oracle on OS X though, this is just what a simple Google search brought up.
  • I was very surprised that Oracle released Oracle Database for Mac OSX, especially, version 10g now that 11g has been out for almost 2 years. Well, I guess Oracle wanted to please Mac users expecting things just work and decided that good proved 10g is the way to go. On the other hand, we’ve been supporting 11g in production for quite a while and I must say it’s much better quality compare.
  • MacOS, the operating system previously known as Mac OS X, is beautiful, stable, and typically attached to a $1000+ MacBook / iMac. If we want to run macOS on a Windows PC, without the very particular hardware required for Hackintosh, a Mac OS X virtual machine is the next best thing.
  • Oracle’s Instant Client is a valuable tool allowing anyone on a Mac to connect to Oracle databases, and is a prerequisite for installing SQL Developer, SQLPlus, or OCI8 (for PHP connectivity). However, Oracle’s documentation for installing Instant Client is very light.

Mike, That’s the Oracle Client software that the article discusses. While the Oracle client is large, it doesn’t let you have the database natively on the Mac OS.

I finally got it working and thought I’d post what I did for others that are new to OS X.

Download Instant Client

First you’ll nee to download the Instant Client for OS X. I downloaded the following files for Version 11.2.0.3.0 (64-bit):

  • instantclient-basic-macos.x64-11.2.0.3.0.zip
  • instantclient-sqlplus-macos.x64-11.2.0.3.0.zip

Unzip both files and put their contents in /oracle/instantclient_11_2/

Wait until the download completes, and then open it (the exact procedure varies a bit per browser). Open the ‘OpenVPN Connect installer’ to start the installation.

Setting Paths

You’ll need to set the appropriate paths to load by default in Terminal. Open Terminal and run:

Running SQL*Plus

Now when you open a new terminal window you should be able to run SQL*Plus

Additional Addons

When using SQL*Plus in Windows you can use the Up arrow to get your previous command. If you do that in Linux you’ll get some weird character. The good news is that there’s a program to resolve it called rlwrap. CJ Travis has a good post on how to install rlwrap of Mac OS X.

Can we install Oracle 12c Database without using any Virtual Machine ? Currently I have installed it in VMWare Fusion but it is consuming a lot of power.

Oracle Database 12c doesn't run on OS X, so I guess you'll have to stick to a VM running a supported OS (see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html):

VM appears to be the only solution currently. You can attempt to dual boot your OS with a linux distribution, and install Oracle on that. I have only been able to install the instant client to get the SQL Developer to work on my OS X.

So something like this:/Library/Oracle/instantclient_11_2/network/admin/

on SQL Developer, you can then point the directory to the tnsnames.ora in this directory to get your connections.
